My Picture a Day for 2006
This is a brief photo-diary of my photographic adventures in 2006. There will be a post each day of my favorite image that I have taken that day. I hope you enjoy them.

Day 242
You'll have to excuse my lateness again...actually you don't have to but I would appreciate it. Reba and I have been getting ready for a short trip to North Carolina and have had a lot of loose ends to tie up so I haven't had time to post. I also haven't had a lot of time to photograph either so you are going to see some crap until I can get the N.C. pictures up. Thanks for your patience.

Day 241
Today was a very exciting day. We battled the hurricane forecasts for work to see what we would need to do for the schools. It appears to be much ado about nothing. I know we shouldn't take these things lightly but this is not going to be anywhere near what they originally expected. on top of that, my new lens came today. It is a Tamron 11-18mm if anyone is interested. This is a picture taken with it. I wanted to photgraph something that would show off the wide angle capabilities. Note the sunset on the right of the picture and the moon on the left. Have a safe couple of days and stay out of the hurricane.

Day 238
We had a day of running around and decided to go out to eat and then for a ride to find something to photograph. There is a park in Sanford on a small lake called Sylvan Lake Park. We went for a walk around the park and Reba noticed this mushroom. She said it reminded her of me since she keeps me in the dark and feeds me sh__.

Day 235 From the mind of...
Remember those ads? Actually it wasn't too long ago. Over the years Minolta has turned out some incredible lenses and cameras. The engineers were great, the marketers not so good. Even a couple of years ago when their first digital SLR came out (at least the first one that an average person could afford to get) their marketing campaign did not do it justice. Eventually, earlier this year they sold the camera division to Sony. This really may be the best thing to happen to them They kept the division from Minolta to design and make them, and Sony, which always had difficulty on the product end is marketing. Good luck guys. BTW, in case you are interested, this is in full color,. not B&W.

Day 233
This is a picture of an old Yashica-Mat EM camera. These cameras were originally released in 1964. This was given to me by a friend at work who had it around the house and figured I would appreciate it. It now holds a place of honor above my darkroom. As far as I can tell, it is functioning perfectly. I just need to find some film for it and give it a shot.

Day 228
Tonight was the maiden voyage of the Molly Malone's softball team. Armed with a lot of goodwill and spirit (or maybe spirits) they took the field despite not having had any time to practice. The first game was a learning experience but after suffering through a 15 run first inning, they settled down. The final was 25-0. The second game however was a different story. They caught the ball and hit much better. The game was close until the opponents pulled away in the final inning but overall, there was much improvement.

Day 224
I had some catching up to do as far as posting but this should get me back on schedule. I was at the birding trail again checking out the Scrub Jays. I am still amazed at how comfortable some of them are with a human being that close. This one was walking around like I wasn't there when all of a sudden, its wings started shaking and he got very aggressive. It turns out another bird was moving in on its territory. The intruder landed but was quickly run off. This one went right back to his search like nothing had happened.

Day 219
I know it's another bird picture but I like bird pictures. This little guy was only about a foot tall but the way he was eating, he won't stay that way for long. I was at the lake for about a half hour and he hunted and ate continuously for the whole time. I wouldn't have thought he could hold that many minnows.

Day 214
There is a park located on a canal off of the St. Johns River system called Mariner's Cove. It is not a particularly interesting park, some tennis courts, soccer field, picnic tables and a boat ramp, but I decided to go there to see if there was anything worth photographing. As I was approaching the dock, an older gentleman with what I believe may have been a very prominent Greek accent started pointing to a tree on the other side of the canal and was saying "big raccoon". Sure enough, on the other side of the canal was a raccoon that was probably 2 1/2 feet long (not counting his tail). He was in the very top of what was about a 30 foot tree. After a couple of minutes, I heard a snap as a small limb broke and, hanging on for dear life, he pulled himself up and avoided landing in the water. He immediately began his descent and disapperared into the woods. Truth be known, in reality he was climbing down at the time of this photo. I just found the picture a little hard to look at turned that way so I rotated it so he looks like he was going horizontally. I also gave this shot a sandstone finish so it would have a "painting" feel.

Day 213
It was back to the birding trail this evening. While I was there the other day, a lady was walking a big ol' dog around the path. I mentioned that I was looking for little birds and was pretty surprised to see him (big ol' dog) come around the corner. She asked if I had been to a certain area of the preserve (I promised I wouldn't tell anyone where). She said that if you walked along slowly, Scrub Jays would come down and sit on the fence right by you. I was about out of time so I decided to wait until another time. Tonight was the time. I was slowly walking along when all of a sudden a bird flew into a tree about 10 feet away. It sat right there as I clumsily rambled through the brush trying to get a good angle. Within a minute, I began to see a lot of movement. The jays were flying around practically landing on my feet. They wandered around on the ground by me like I wasn't there. This guy was about 3 feet from me and had no fear at all.
